Earlier this year, 18-year-old Claire Boniface began agreeing with men who handed her compliments online. Rather than abiding by the expected "thank you for noticing me won't you please pay me more attention" model some men seem to expect after deigning to bestow their "respects," she instead replied with "thank you, I know" or "yep."
The results were disastrous. Compliments were retracted, insults were hurled — women, it seems, are not allowed to validate themselves. That is a task left to men. Any modicum of self-confidence, of assuredness, is met with aggression. Upset the balance, and all hell breaks loose.
This week, my roommate and I are attempting the same experiment, and the results have been similarly horrifying. I'll keep y'all posted.
