Something about this is so...icky. Sure, there's nothing wrong with being curious, but it's a little off-putting when it's the first question posed. It's a line of questioning that seems, for the most part, unique to the Asian-American experience. Few others have to experience the humiliation that comes with the inquiry, "But where are you actually from?" It's almost as though my citizenship, my American-ness, is called into question because of my heritage. Because cosmetically, I cannot hide my differences. I wouldn't want to anyway.
